Historically, the West Village has been known for its quintessential dining establishments. Filled with adorable date-spots like Rosemary’s and Joseph Leonard, and quaint and cozy restaurants like The Spotted Pig and Jeffrey’s Grocery, the WV is filled with hotspots that reflect the neighborhood’s natural charm. More recently, NYC casual favorites Bluestone Lane, Jack’s Wife Freda, The Butcher’s Daughter, Otto’s Tacos and more, have recognized the area’s need for more casual restaurants, and have opened spots in the area! This past Spring, 2nd City Chef and Owner, Jordan Andino, also recognized the area’s need for a fast-casual restaurant full of charm and culture, and opened his Filipino Taqueria hotspot on Hudson Street!
2nd City is best described as a Filipino Taqueria, and what’s most amazing about 2nd City is that the menu offers options for people of all dietary restrictions. Gluten-free, vegan, paleo, vegetarian, dairy-free… you name it! AND for dishes that are not gluten-free, the kitchen is happy to make them gluten-free upon request. For example, the Poke Me is one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. This tuna poke is dressed in a sauce that contains gluten and is finished with wontons, but it can be made gluten-free when you ask for no sauce and no wontons! Yes it may be a bit plain this way, but 2nd City offers 3 sauces that are gluten-free and are sure to spice your meal up! The best option for us gluten-free folk is the Pass The Bowl. The bowl is naturally GF and vegan, but if you want to make it a bit more filling you can top it off with a protein. Toppings include tuna, barracuda (yes, I said BARRACUDA), or GF fried chicken!! There is a fried chicken sandwich on the menu, and this fried chicken, as noted above, is GF! Unfortunately, there is no GF bread offered (yet), so for now you’ll have to enjoy the fried chicken as a topping on a bowl. One of my favorite dishes was the Bi-Curious tacos! One taco is made with butter poached barracuda and one is made with slow braised short rib… and they are both awesome and gluten-free! The menu is small, which I like, and for the regulars, the menu becomes a bit larger as the 2nd City team will fill their most loyal customers in on secret menu items!
I love the ambiance of 2nd City. Employees are dressed in fun, Hawaiian apparel, the wall art is unique, and the music is the perfect touch. I should also note that the staff is SUPER friendly, making 2nd City warm and inviting, and a total neighborhood gem for those who live nearby. Whether you are a West Village resident or just in the mood for some awesome Filipino cuisine, you should absolutely give 2nd City a try!
