Navy NYC is one of the most underrated restaurants in SoHo. Located next to quintessential NYC hotspot, The Dutch, and just blocks away from crowd favorites Hundred Acres and Little Prince, Navy is often overlooked by my friends and I when we are making our weekend reservations. I’ve heard about the restaurant for some time now; several friends have commented that it is the perfect date spot and the food more than does the trick. Well, after checking out the menu and seeing the use of nobread friendly grains in each dish and as well as my favorite vegetables, I decided it was time to go check the restaurant out…
Chef Camille Becerra serves classic American and seafood dishes, featuring seasonal vegetables garnished with nuts and spices. All of the dishes are homey and hearty, and you can feel Chef’s love for healthy, natural food in each dish. The menu is constantly changing, but the majority of the menu is, and always will be, gluten free. For lunch, I ordered the restaurant’s signature dish, the egg bowl. The dish features a poached egg served on top of roasted vegetables and a mix of grains. I figured this dish was NOT gluten free; however, the grains used are rice and quinoa. The egg bowl is delicious and VERY filling; I highly recommend it! For lunch I was also eyeing the quinoa crisp with avocado, chorizo, tomatillo, and egg. The quinoa crisp is similar to a potato pancake, but made with quinoa, potato, onion, and NO flour. The chicory salad with grilled chicken is also gluten free if you ask for nofarro and the hanger steak is a standard menu item that shouldn’t be missed.
Navy is open for breakfast, too, and it is an adorable restaurant to meet a friend at and catch up over a quick coffee. The breakfast menu features pastries and egg sandwiches, which are nobread unapproved, but the kitchen is happy to prepare a sandwich nobread! For dinner, I recommend the chilled squid with charred cauliflower and the poached tuna and octopus. As I mentioned earlier, the menu changes daily depending on which vegetables and seafood inspire Chef Camille while she is at the market. This attribute makes Navy stand out from competing restaurants in the area, and is why I will be returning to the restaurant very, very soon!
