Brooklyn is full of amazing, new restaurants that are deserving of more attention, and The Heyward in Williamsburg is one of these spots. Brought to Brooklyn by the guys behind popular NYC spot, Hudson Clearwater, The Heyward is awesome, and the perfect choice for your next BK date night. Not only am I amazed at the quality of cuisine served at the restaurant, but I am also impressed at how gluten-friendly the menu is. Everything on the menu is GF or can be made GF except for a few items, and the kitchen is also happy to withhold gluten from dishes so they can be enjoyed by all!…

For the seafood crowd, The Heyward has an incredible raw bar, with raw dishes such as oysters, little neck clams, and shrimp, which  are seen on tables throughout the restaurant. For dinner, to begin, I highly recommend the spicy glazed octopus, shrimp & grits, and crudo. My friend and I opted for the fluke crudo which was a special of the night and the octopus which was one of my favorite dishes. Given that I am dairy-free, too, I had to pass on the shrimp & grits, but my friend exclaimed that it was incredible and an absolute must-order. For our main course, we ordered the arctic char–another special of the night–and the soft shell crab. The arctic char was incredibly flavorful–I still can’t stop thinking about the soft shell crab. Soft shell crab, when in season, is typically NOBREAD-UNapproved due to the use of flour batter. However, the crab at The Heyward is dusted in a rice flour which is gluten free and pretty amazing. The crab, as well as other dishes cooked in a fryer, are subject to cross contamination, so if you are sensitive you will have to sit these out.

I recently went to The Heyward again for brunch, and again, had an awesome experience. The greenmarket salad was light and flavorful, and I supplemented my healthy salad with less-healthy bacon, fries (subject to cc) and cheesy grits! Delicious food, great service, and a cool vibe, The Heyward has definitely won over my heart. If you haven’t been yet, I highly recommend checking this hotspot out!
