Ixcateco Grill is a colorful, fresh and delicious take on Mexican cuisine in a city saturated with Mexican restaurants. Head to Albany Park to visit Frontera Grill veteran, Anselmo Ramirez, for a unique and memorable Mexican meal…
Make a brunch reservation and head up north for a meal hard to find anywhere downtown. From his years with the Frontera Grill franchise, Chef Ramirez knows first-hand how to elevate Mexican cuisine, but at Ixcateco Grill, he finds a way to make it approachable. They are very knowledgeable about gluten-free items and recommend avoiding anything fried due to cross contamination. The hot tortillas make up nicely for the lack of chips but stay clear of the mole made with breadcrumbs.
I started Sunday brunch with a special Mexican coffee, café de oya (olla), flavored with cinnamon, allspice, orange peel and a few more secret spices. One sip had my taste buds buzzing with excitement for what was to come. To start the meal we ordered the queso fundido topped with house made chorizo, pickled cactus and micro-greens with a side of fresh corn tortillas. This ain’t your average queso – it was rich, savory and outstanding.
For entrées we went with the carne asada, covered in a finger-licking tomato salsa served alongside soft and tangy black beans and guacamole. The chicken enchiladas topped with blistering chihuahua cheese were perfection, but the prize of the meal were the huevos rancheros. One hot tortilla is layered with garlic mashed potatoes, then layered in guajillo chili sauce and topped with an over-easy egg, cheese and greens. This textured and luxurious dish is unbelievably satisfying and left us fighting over the last bite. Needless to say, can’t wait for my next visit!
