You wouldn’t think an Italian restaurant could have gluten free options but Mama’s Boy does. Although they do not have an alternate gluten-free menu, the chef, Nahuel Rodriguez, assured me that they take special precautions to avoid cross-contimination and many dishes can be prepared gluten-free. The measures they go to in order for every guest to have a delightful experience makes you feel like you’re at your friend’s grandmother’s house for a Sunday meal.
My friend and I had the opportunity to taste six of their dishes. The presentations of each were attractive and the portion size was substantial. I left feeling like I had just eaten a full Thanksgiving meal, however, I was very content.
We started with their traditional Caesar salad and a spinach salad that had roasted beets, pomegranate, goat cheese, red grapes, roasted pistachios and a roasted beet dressing.
Next, we sampled their penne pasta with marinara and ricotta cheese. I have to spend a little time talking about how delicious their marinara sauce and penne pasta was. I was tempted to ask the chef if they sell bottles of their homemade marinara. I couldn’t get over it. Now to the pasta. Nahuel carefully explained to me the process they take to ensure their delicious gluten free pasta is not contaminated. All of their gluten free pasta is made with a finely pressed corn starch and is prepared in a separate pasta well in the morning and then warmed with fresh water before serving. It was really refreshing knowing that the chef cares about his customers’ allergies.
Once the pasta was taken away, a chicken parmesan and an eggplant parmesan dish were brought out with marinara sauce, which I was ecstatic about. In case you are dairy-free like me, these dishes can be prepared without cheese too. The eggplant parmesan included a variety of grilled vegetables like asparagus, roasted red peppers and zucchini. The presentation of both of these dishes were beautiful.
I didn’t know if I would have room for dessert but that thought went out the door when the Nutella penne cotta and the flourless chocolate cake arrived. My friend and I have a huge sweet tooth so both of these dishes were devoured almost instantly. The penne cotta flavors change almost daily so if you aren’t a fan of chocolate, be sure to ask your waiter what the flavor is for that day. I don’t know how to begin describing how good the chocolate cake was. Each bite is better than the next and practically melts in your mouth.
If you’re looking for a hearty meal at a place that feels like home, make a reservation at Mama’s Boy. You will not be disappointed.
