Located on the lower level of the Hotel Monaco, South Water Kitchen (SWK) is a downtown staple. Blocks away from the Chicago River, Theatre District, endless shopping and many Loop offices, SWK is your gluten-free dining safe haven. Not only are menus extensive for every meal of the day, SWK even has a dedicated gluten-free cocktail, beer and cider menu.

I visited for lunch and began with deviled eggs topped bacon and mustard seed caviar and gluten-free mac and cheese. The upscale take on mac and cheese is penne noodles drenched in melted white cheese and topped with crispy bacon. The mac and cheese is ooey, gooey awesomeness.

I had to try one of their famous burgers and opted for the turkey wild rice topped with a cranberry compote, watercress and mixed greens on gluten-free bread. This burger was Thanksgiving on a bun! The poached salmon salad was refreshing and perfect for a weekday lunch on their great patio. The salmon was served on a bed of greens, watercress, cucumber, tomatoes and served with a light, dill vinaigrette.

My favorite dish was their award winning PB&J sandwich. This triple-decker grilled sandwich does not contain what you’re thinking (peanut butter), but rather the “PB” stands for brie and pear. Chef Roger’s genius idea slices brie, spiced pears and blueberry jam all on toasted gluten-free bread. This award-winning sandwich is one of the best I’ve ever had. It’s served with a side of kettle chips for a crunchy accompaniment.

With a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, SWK should be your new go-to for a great gluten-free meal. Go for the PB&J, stay for a cocktail.
