Hinterland, located right on Main St. in Santa Monica, opened in the area in March 2015 and has been well received by the Santa Monica community since its debut. The restaurant was opened by the guys behind NYC’s Hudson Terrance and Brooklyn’s The Hayward– two amazing restaurants– so my expectations were pretty high headed into the evening. As presumed, Hinterland did not disappoint! Delicious food in an adorable atmosphere, this restaurant is one of Santa Monica’s most underrated spots…
To start, my friend and I ordered the grilled prawns on top of arugula and prosciutto. This classic salad is a perfect appetizer to split with a friend. Although I’m not a big fan of oysters, they are one of the most popular orders at the restaurant, and an order of oysters is a must for the table. Oysters, high ceilings, a bar that serves beer & wine only, and tables set for two makes Hinterland an ideal date-spot! Our second appetizer (and our favorite dish of the night) was the charred octopus greek salad. Bits of octopus are served with diced cucumber, onion, and tomato, and set on top of hummus… delicious! For our main course, we ordered the grilled fish of the day, which was salmon with grilled vegetables, and Hinterland’s famous pork chop. The pork chop is served with an accompanying sauce and vegetables, and this sauce contains butter, so if you are dairy-free like myself then you should ask for the sauce on the side! Lastly, if you can handle food that is cooked in a shared fryer, you have to order the steak fries! The potato wedges are delicious and served with a side of pesto and a side of aioli; my friend and I almost ordered a second!
Overall, Hinterland is VERY gluten-friendly and the restaurant absolutely exceeded my expectations! Delicious food and an awesome vibe, I recommend going to Hinterland for your next date night! And if you aren’t a lover of beer & wine, there is a liquor store across the street for your post-dinner drink craving!
