Prior to living in LA, I knew of poke only from tropical vacations and articles highlighting the cuisine of Hawaii. Now that I’ve made the move to the West Coast, I can’t escape the poke craze! And I’ll admit it… I’m totally into it! For those of you unfamiliar with poke, it is pronounced “poe-kay,” and it refers to raw fish (typically tuna or salmon) that is served over rice or kale and topped with different fruits, vegetables, and delicious sauces. There are countless poke shops in Los Angeles, each competing for the crown of LA’s best poke spot, and for all of my poke-crazed followers, I have another place to put on your radar…
The Poke Shack is located on Melrose in West Hollywood and just off of the Venice Beach boardwalk. The concept at Poke Shack is great; you can choose a pre-set menu option, or make your own! The bowls are offered in two sizes: the Lil Daddy and the Big Daddy. I went to the Shack last week for my first time, and given how hungry I was, I ordered the Big Daddy. And let me tell you, the Big Daddy is, well… BIG. After you pick your size, you pick a base (white or brown rice, seaweed salad, organic kale), protein (salmon or tuna), toppings, and a sauce. So what is gluten-free? You’re good to go with the bases, proteins, and toppings, but when it comes to the sauces, as tasty as they all sound, none are gluten-free! Fortunately, however, The Poke Shack has a gluten-free soy sauce for the NOBREAD-crowd. For my bowl, I went with salmon on kale and seaweed salad, topped with avocado, cucumber, and mango! It was delicious!
Given The Poke Shack’s prime locations in West Hollywood and Venice, it’s no wonder why this little poke shop has received so much attention. With tasty cuisine, a cool vibe, and great price points, Poke Shack will definitely have you leaving happy.
