So here's what we think...

When I first went gluten free, gluten free breads were nearly non-existent. Furthermore, the one or two gluten free breads on the market were mediocre at best. The result? Sandwiches were essentially deleted from my diet. Nowadays, gluten free bakers and companies strive to produce the best gluten free bread, and plenty of delicious brands have emerged! This week, I learned that Untamed Sandwiches, located in Midtown West, not only has gluten free rolls for their sandwiches, but the rolls are produced by none other than my beloved Free Bread in Brooklyn!…

The rolls are gluten and dairy free a.k.a right up my alley! Also, all sandwiches at Untamed Sandwiches are gluten free when you ask for the gluten free roll except for the Hot Goldie, a short rib sandwich. This was a slight bummer because I love short rib, but my disappointment was VERY short lived as every other sandwich on the menu is amazing. I had the opportunity to taste three sandwiches: Sheemakers Bounty (charred broccoli), General Zapata (chicken tinga), and the Nettle Neck (braised lamb). The sheemakers bounty was AMAZING and is an excellent option for vegetarians. Served with charred broccoli, fried almond butter, pickled raisin jelly, and cress, this sandwich, like all other sandwiches offered, was very tasty. The food pairings in each sandwich are also very unique. The nettle neck sandwich of braised lamb neck is combined with a walnut nettle pesto amongst other ingredients, and the second I heard pesto I knew I would love it. Untamed also serves an extensive list of side orders, and all of these sides are gluten free except for the chili and rye berry salad. I know cross contamination is a big fear amongst the nobread crowd, especially at smaller fast casual restaurants where ingredients are kept close together and cooked in the same ovens, toasters, etc, but owner, Andy Jacobi, told me that although they are not a certified gluten free restaurant, they make every effort to ensure there is no cross contamination in their kitchen. The gluten free bread is placed on a separate tray when it goes through the toaster and allergies are noted and taken very seriously.

Untamed Sandwiches is unique, the ambiance is adorable, and the sandwiches are delicious. There aren’t enough fast casual restaurants near me in SoHo, and so I’m excited for Untamed to expand… hopefully down to my area! I was excited to see how popular the restaurant was during the 12-1pm lunch hour, too, and now that I’ve experienced the sandwiches for myself I understand why. Nobread friendly and delicious, once you have your first sandwich you’ll be back for more in no time!
