Steakhouses in Midtown East are a dime a dozen, so what makes Davio’s standout from the pack? Well, they are the first steakhouse I have been to with a dedicated gluten free lunch and dinner menu. Not only is this menu extensive but it essentially mirrors the regular menu.  All items on the regular menu are naturally gluten free with the exception of a few dishes including the crispy chicken livers, pan seared foie gras, hand rolled potato gnocchi, lobster, wild mushrooms, goat cheese puffs, and brussels sprouts. The rest- fair game!…

Now to all the delicious GLUTEN FREE food you can eat! Last night I attended a multi-course tasting at Davio’s and left both stuffed and satisfied. Executive Chef, Chad Brown, commented that he began cooking gluten free at his restaurant when he realized the demand for it. Gluten free foods and breaded foods are kept apart from each other in the kitchen and cooked completely separately. Furthermore,  all employees are trained to understand gluten sensitivities and other dietary restrictions. Fueling the desire to create customized gluten free dishes at Davio’s stems from owner, Steve DiFillippo, whose daughter went gluten free about 6 years ago. (Yes she and I were both gluten free before gluten free became cool).

All of the carne and pesce dishes are gluten free, and I recommend the salmon with roasted root vegetables, the halibut, and ANY of the steaks. Also, all sauces offered to accompany your dish are naturally gluten free. For an appetizer, I highly recommend the baked shrimp as well as the roasted root vegetable salad (not listed on the menu). Gluten free fusilli is available and created from a corn and rice flour blend. The pasta is delicious and I highly recommend the fusilli with organic wild mushrooms, basil, and white truffle oil.

From its gluten free menu, bread, and pasta to its helpful, attentive, and accommodating staff, I have nothing but positive things to say about DiFillippo’s newest establishment.
