Some say that everything tastes better on a stick, and lunch at We Grill certainly lives up to the saying! A variety of fresh, healthy, eclectic skewers, soups and sides will appeal to all tastes at this small, charismatic lunch shop tucked away in Leadenhall Market – a historical, covered market place in the City of London. Seasonal, innovative, gluten-free and packed with flavour… this is not your typical kebab shop…
Soon celebrating its 2nd birthday, We Grill is not a chain and boasts a constantly changing menu, of which +80% of the dishes are naturally gluten-free. Skewers include Asian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean vegetarian, beef, chicken, fish options and are recommended with a variety of dips. While most of the dips do unfortunately contain soy sauce, the owner casually whipped us up a garlic-y avocado yoghurt dip topped with almond slivers– which was a lovely compliment to his family’s lamb meatballs (gluten-free!) and tender beef skewers (juicy, pink centres and a beautiful, light chimichurri drizzle that doubled as salad dressing for the greens below). I was most surprised by the Lebanese halloumi skewers, which marinated in a vibrant, chipotle lime dressing was worlds away from the often bland and overly chewy Greek cheese I am accustomed to. With separate fryers and grills, there’s no chance of cross contamination here either.
While the skewers are the focus, save room for the sides! The majority are gluten-free, health-conscious and all vegetarian. The real show stealer is a small pot of black rice with parsnip pieces and green peas, and a small poached egg balanced on top to pop and enjoy. Takeaway or eat-in, amazing hospitality and niche gluten-free offerings, we look forward to going back soon!
