Split Bread, with two locations in downtown SF, is an excellent lunch option for the GF crowd. Seemingly a step above the normal fast-casual lunch options, here you’ll find an extensive menu of burgers, sandwiches, and salads, all made with super fresh and high quality ingredients. This is the type of place everyone wants to have within walking distance of their office …
The star of the show here is anything between bread, and in your case, that’s a gluten-free bun that looks and tastes quite comparable to the real thing. The burger comes in three variations: Split burger with special sauce and American cheese, D’lux burger with avocado, caramelized onion and bleu cheese, or the good old Classic with lettuce, tomato, and cheese of your choice. I went with the Classic which did not disappoint. Of the eight different sandwich combos on the menu, five were gluten-free when served on the GF bun. Unfortunately anything with the crispy chicken is off limits, but there are plenty of other enticing options to choose from. The roasted portobello mushroom sandwich will be an obvious choice for vegetarians, but even as a meat eater, I was very into this one and named it my favorite of all three sandwiches I tasted. Although their sister spot Mixt Greens (which is next door on Mission St) might be a more natural choice for those interested in entree sized salads at lunch, all the salads here can be topped with their spit roasted pulled chicken, which is a bit different than what you’ll get next door, and reason enough to come here instead if that’s you’re thing. I went this route and ordered the Split Cobb with crispy bacon and a soft boiled egg, and topped it with the pulled chicken. The chicken was amazingly flavorful and tender, and obviously a step above the chicken that often accompanies takeout salads. The Presidio salad was equally delicious; this one made up of baby kale with shaved parmesan, roasted cauliflower and sweet potato, and toasted almonds. Last but not least, I must mention the Split fries, which were amazing and 100% GF, as they were fried in their very own fryer. They’re sprinkled with herbs and shaved parmesan, and must be ordered with whatever else you’re getting.
Split Bread is crushing the lunch game. Check out one of their two locations, both of which have tons of indoor as well as outdoor seating. Arrive with ample time though, because you won’t be the only one lining up for this deliciousness.
