As we jump into the spring season, I’ve never been more ready for two things: some good seafood and brunch season. Blue Plate Oysterette – with locations in both Santa Monica and West Hollywood– has just introduced their brunch menu at their WeHo location. And we are nothing short of impressed…
Being the ceviche lovers that we are, we had to start with the Peruvian ceviche served with corn chips. The fish was fresh and marinated in a delicious tomato-based bath. We got this with some yellow corn tortilla chips to make it GF! With the option to choose from both the brunch and regular, the options were plentiful, so we chose a couple items from the brunch like the Jonah Crab chilequiles and the B.L.L.A.T (bacon, lobster, lettuce, avocado and tomato) with fries to pair with our ceviche. The former was my favorite, fresh Jonah crab served atop corn tortilla chips, a red sauce, arugula, crème fraiche, and a perfectly cooked fried egg that oozed just the right amount when sliced open. But then we couldn’t not have lobster, so we ordered the latter with no bread, and it was just as tasty and filling, not to mention gluten-free. For some fresher, lighter fare, we were immediately draw to a clam special – a dish of sautéed clams served in a fennel broth, delicately seasoned, fresh and aromatic. This dish particularly reminded me of something from back east, and is perfect for brunch, lunch, or dinner – not to mention presented beautifully.
Bonus! All of their fried dishes can be coated in only cornmeal if asked, therefore they gluten-free but they are subject to cross contamination. So, for those who crave calamari and fries and can handle the cross contamination situation, this is your spot. If you’re having a boozier brunch, don’t forget to order a Green Juice–a delightfully refreshing cocktail of blank tequila, cilantro, jalapeño and lime.
BPO is welcoming and has an awesome ambiance with an open roofed patio. Although the brunch menu is smaller than their usual menu, the options are amazing. And with the option to order from both, you can’t go wrong. BPO will be seeing us again soon…very soon.
