An underground, Mexican restaurant located in the depths of Chinatown– aka the PERFECT spot for this year’s birthday dinner. I went to Pulqueria this week with 14 girlfriends and couldn’t have had a better experience. As with any Mexican restaurant review, I need to start with the guacamole. The guacamole is a rather small portion (I think we ended up ordering 5 orders), but it has a smooth consistency and is delicious. Note- it is sprinkled with cheese on top, so if you are nodairy be sure to ask for your guacamole without the parmmesan. The corn chips at Pulqueria are fried, but not to worry- there is NO cross contamination…
For my main course, I asked the waiter what options were suitable for my nobread life and he confidently replied “awesome, anything here can be done gluten free.” His confidence and enthusiasm at hearing someone at the table was gluten free shows that the waitstaff at Pulqueria understands how to cater to customers with gluten allergies and other food sensitivities. He was right, I really didn’t have to worry much at all. All tacos are gluten free and served on a corn tortilla EXCEPT for the chicken taco which is served on a flour tortilla– so if you’re craving chicken, be sure to ask for it on corn. Also, if you order the fish taco, the fish is dusted in flour but can easily be done noflour. The tostadas and tortas are excellent as well and are served on a corn tortilla shell. Add the esquites (grilled corn off the cob with mayo and cheese) for a classic Mexican side and market vegetables (mix of squash, potatoes, and cactus) if you’re in the mood for a little extra something to supplement your order. Oh and I can’t forget about dessert! Pulqueria serves flan as a nobread dessert option, and I was very impressed by my flan with a candle.
The drinks may look a little pricey at first, but this is NOT the case when you order a pitcher. One pitcher serves about 5-6 people and is the same price as ordering about 4 individual drinks. I highly recommend the classic, jalapeno cucumber, and watermelon pulque. Pulqueria is perfect for large groups and celebrations, has great drinks, amazing food, and an accommodating service that understands gluten and allergy restrictions. We will absolutely be back!
