Chef Josh Capon has mastered burgers and seafood, so why not take on Mexican? El Toro Blanco has received a ton of attention since opening in late 2012, and with my love for guacamole and margaritas it’s no wonder why I’m a frequent customer at this hotspot. Great food, amazing drinks, cool vibe, and a menu that notes which items contain gluten; El Toro Blanco is fun, delicious, and NOBREAD-approved!..
So what can you eat? To start, you obviously need to order the guacamole and queso. The guacamole is made fresh to order and also served with a trio of salsas. If you binge on the chips and guacamole like I often do, I suggest having the tostada chopped salad as a healthy meal choice. This salad is gluten free UNTIL you add the beef/chicken/shrimp. So if you order this, order it nomeat and nofish, OR ask for the meat/fish to be prepared gluten free. The tacos at El Toro are gluten free and served on corn tortillas. The fish, octopus, lobster, and shrimp tacos are noted on the menu as containing gluten, but this is just due to the sauce used on the fish and they can easily be done without the sauce! Also, the ground beef, pork, and roast chicken, tacos ARE 100% NOBREAD-approved. My friends and I ordered the shrimp and chicken tacos and loved them both! Upon hearing we were craving steak, our waitress offered us steak tacos, which weren’t on the menu, and these may have been our favorite! I also recommend checking out the ceviche. The lobster and snapper ceviches are gluten-free; I had the lobster and it was delicious. Lastly, you can’t go to a Mexican restaurant and not order the street corn! This side dish is the perfect supplement to round out your meal.
El Toro Blanco is also great for brunch, especially when it is nice out. Outdoor tables line 6th Avenue and with its location right across from Da Silvano, this little corner can be quite the scene on sunny days. For brunch, classic Mexican dishes including the chilaquiles con huevos, huevos rancheros, enchiladas, steak & eggs, and Mexican omelette are gluten-free and will satisfy your Mexican food craving… and hangover.
