Only in New York City is an open warehouse with a Taco truck for a kitchen considered a “hot-spot”. Intrigued by this feature, I knew I needed to go there and try it. Prior to my first visit, I checked out the menu and immediately noticed two things. First- beer, wine, and Sangria only. So to the hard-alcohol-ONLY drinkers of the world, bring your flask!! Not to worry, they have a list of Aguas Frescas Y Sodas, and Lupitas Juices to use as mixers. Secondly, menus are marked with a ‘V’ for vegetarian, and it is noted that their tacos are made on freshly-ground, gluten free corn tortillas…
Tacombi is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in New York City, and the food absolutely satisfies your comfort-food craving. To start, you must order the guacamole and ceviche with tortilla chips to share. The tortilla chips are amazing, but cooked in a fryer that is subject to cross contamination. So if you’re like me and have to eat the guacamole and ceviche plain, don’t fear! The guac and ceviche is delicious on its own! I love ALL tacos at Tacombi… and trust me, I’ve tried them all. The seared fish is perfect for the seafood lovers, and the pork shoulder and beef are pretty phenomenal. The only taco that is not gluten free is the barbacoa, but it can be made gluten free if you ask for no sauce. Breakfast tacos are served throughout the day, too! These tacos are served on flour tortilla, so it is not nobread friendly; however, you can ask for the tacos on corn tortillas!
Tacombi is loud and fun, and perfect for a night out with friends. Casual with a touch of NoLiTa hipster and without all the hard alcohol running up your bill – it’s cheap!
