The Grey Dog is a popular brunch spot in New York City with locations in NoLiTa, Union Square, and Chelsea. I’ve attempted to go to The Grey Dog several times this winter, but waiting on an outdoor line during the cold New York City winter doesn’t mesh well for me. This past weekend, a little taste of spring led me to The Grey Dog and now that I’ve been I see why people wait; it is totally worth it! The line moves quick so don’t be alarmed by its length, the portions are huge, and the food is nobread friendly AND completely fulfilling!…
At first glance, the Grey Dog menu seems difficult for the nobread diet as pancakes, waffles and classic oatmeals/granolas are first to catch your eye, and sandwiches and burgers fill the second half of the menu. Yes, you must avoid these breakfast classics but The Grey Dog serves gluten free bread and these sandwiches are nobread approved! This is huge; I highly recommend the sliced granny smith apple with turkey sandwich and pesto chicken sandwich on gluten free bread. My favorite order was the ol’ fashioned omelette complete with home fries and 50¢ per veggie. The omelettes are huge and SO filling! I subbed toast for a fruit cup to make this the perfect, well-balanced nobread meal. If you are in the mood for something healthy, The Grey Dog has an extensive list of salads, all of which are gluten free (minus the seared tuna steak salad). Last item to note is my favorite: the french fries. French fries, sweet potato fries, AND cheese fries are served, but they are cooked in the same fryer as all other foods, and thus subject to cross contamination. The nobread crowd must also avoid the tacos, as they are served on flour tortillas.
Quick, cute, casual, and fun; The Grey Dog is by far my favorite diner in New York City, and we all know how much I love my diners. Throw in a cute waitstaff who understands allergy and dietary restrictions and portions that will leave you full for the afternoon and wah-lah… you have the perfect weekend brunch.
