There is no question that The Surf Lodge, located in Montauk, is one of the hottest destinations on Long Island every Memorial Day through Labor Day. Located right on the water, The Surf Lodge is known for their perfect sunsets, attractive crowd, VERY strict door policy, and most importantly, their food. Like every other Montauk restaurant, The Surf Lodge serves a delicious lobster roll (I order mine nobread), as well as countless other summertime classics. I used to make a dinner reservation at Surf just to get into the hotspot, but after dining here a few times this summer, I’ve decided that the these hard-to-get reservations are absolutely worth it…
At first glance of the dinner menu it can be hard to distinguish between gluten free and non gluten free items. For example, one time when I ordered the pan roasted scallops I was told that they are pre marinaded in a sauce containing gluten and they cannot be prepared gluten free. Also, the avocado salad is a favorite of mine, but make sure you ask for this dish with nosoy dressing. The oysters at Surf are 100% gluten free and a staple dish on every table, and the whole fish of the day served with greens is absolutely delicious and a must order. If you are in the mood for something more filling, I also recommend the half roasted chicken with shaved carrot, almond, and currant salad. I LOVE the french fries at The Surf Lodge and I order them with every meal (and every late night at the bar) but the fries are subject to cross contamination so if you are sensitive I would sit these out.
Sunday Funday is my favorite time at The Surf Lodge. The day usually starts with a brunch reservation and ends with friends sitting around a bonfire eating lobster rolls and french fries… nothing is better! For brunch, gluten free options are limited but orders can be accommodated to suit your preference. For example, I typically order the Big Breakie which is two eggs done to your liking with roast tomato and sauteed mushrooms and spinach. The eggs are served on top of bread, but this dish is 100% gluten free if you ask for it nobread. The roasted summer squash salad with watercress and shaved almonds nocheese is my other go-to order at Surf, and I like to supplement it with extra crispy bacon (if I’m feeling hungover) or a fruit bowl (if I’m feeling healthy).
Every weekend that I go to Montauk, at least one of my meals is eaten at The Surf Lodge, and although this has been tough on the wallet, it has been fulfilling on the stomach. Great food, great crowd, and an awesome vibe; The Surf Lodge is Montauk’s quintessential summer restaurant and if you haven’t been yet I highly recommend checking it out!
