I’ve never met an Australian cafe that I didn’t like. I also have never met an Australian that I didn’t like… but that’s a different story. Banter, newly opened in Greenwich Village by two Two Hands alums (another favorite Aussie hotspot) is quickly disrupting the cafe scene here in New York City with its colorful brunch dishes and a menu that features your favorite breakfast and brunch items all day. With plenty of gluten-free options, a cute ambiance, and cool vibe, one meal will have you wanting to go back for more…
At first glance of the menu it may not seem like there are many gluten-free options, but that’s just because Aussie’s love their toast! In reality, there is plenty you can eat. I ordered the Greens Salad which was absolutely delicious and topped it with a poached egg! The salad is made up of kale, broccoli, quinoa, sunflower seeds, chili, avocado, and dijon honey dressing, and it is super filling. You can also add smoked salmon to the dish! I also ordered the Banter Bowl made up on quinoa, edamame, avocado, pickled carrot, ponzu cucumber, crunchy cabbage, smoked salmon, and a miso-tahini dressing. This bowl doesn’t sound gluten-free, but the Asian influences used are, and I am so thankful for it! Whatever you do, you must try the sweet potato fries. The fries are thicker an salted to perfection, and they don’t taste greasy or fried! I love side orders, and I almost opted to make a meal out of all sides instead of ordering a dish! Eggs, avocado, prosciutto, smoked salmon, and more GF sides grace the menu, and are perfect accompaniments for your meal!
I’m not in NYC too often anymore, but I am happy to say Banter has been added to my go-to NYC spots that I will visit every time I’m home! Especially now that it’s Spring/Summer and the outdoor seating is open and adorable! I’m excited to see Banter become a staple cafe in the NYC cafe scene.
