If there’s one food trend that I’m actually obsessed with, it’s the sushiritto. In my book, there’s really nothing better than getting my sushi fix while eating a burrito and not feeling disgusting afterwards. Luckily, DC hopped on this trend fast, with the very welcome addition of Buredo…
Buredo is one of those lunch places you’ll wait 45 minutes in line for, just because the thought of going the rest of the day not eating one of their amazing creations is just too unbearable. If you want to skip the line, there are a few delivery apps that can send you your fix, including Favor, Postmates, and Uber EATS.
One of my favorite things about Buredo is their creativity. They only have eight rolls on their menu, but each contain such beautiful ingredients and flavors that you will appreciate the attention they dedicate to each and every item. One of my favorites is the Hanzo with yellowfin tuna sashimi, avocado, cucumber, pickled fennel, arugula, tempura crunch, and lemon aioli. Make sure to ask for the roll without the tempura crunch, which Buredo will happily accommodate. I’m just going to warn you, you’re going to have a lot of feelings after your first bite. The progression I typically experience is pure happiness, then amazement, then confusion about how it could possibly be so amazing, and then sadness, because you know it’s going to end.
Buredo even has several options for vegetarians, and even for vegans! Their Riki with spicy beet, pea shoot leaves, avocado, jicama, pickled cucumber, red onion, garlic dill yogurt has no fish but plenty of flavor. If you’re into tofu, order the Elle with organic tofu, arugula, roasted red pepper, jicama, green onion, black sesame seeds, garlic crunch, and passionfruit miso sauce. I personally haven’t tried this one, but I can tell you I will someday, because that combination of ingredients is so unique my life won’t be complete until I’ve experienced it.
If you love your veggies, order the Vernita Green with local spring greens, carrot, cucumber, watermelon radish, red onion, choice of yuzu miso or asian sesame dressing, and choice of yellowfin tuna, salmon sashimi, or organic tofu, which is essentially a farmers market in a roll.
If you happen to find yourself downtown or even in a five-mile radius of Buredo, definitely make the stop.
