Located in the heart of SoHo is Café Select, a German café that is trendy, yet cozy and warm, AND a great spot for a date or to catch up with friends. Two things set Café Select apart from the rest of NYC restaurants. First, it’s German! You don’t hear of too many German restaurants in NYC except during Octoberfest. Secondly, and probably the best part about Café Select, is that they have a gluten free menu! Yes, I was surprised too. Not only did this save me from having to ask questions, but selecting what I wanted to have was a 1 minute process. An asterisk ‘*’ is used to indicate GF, and over half the menu items have an ‘*’!…
All you have to do at Café Select is look down at the menu and select which starred option is the most appetizing, and you’re all set! So which meals have the ‘*’?? From the salads, I suggest the rocket salad (arugula, fennel, hearts of palm), and the quinoa salad (red & white quinoa, sweet peppers, grape tomato, avocado). From the seafood section, the oysters, grilled squid, and octopus salad (my favorite order of the night) are all gluten free. And for an entrée, I suggest the seared whole branzino, organic chicken, and most importantly the swiss bratwurst. I mean- Café Select IS a German restaurant after all. This bratwurst is served in an onion sauce with potato salad. Also, all of the sides are nobread friendly EXCEPT for the Spatzli (a classic German egg noodle). The market vegetable of the day when I visited recently was roasted brussels sprouts with pancetta. If I wasn’t won over already, this sealed the deal!
Good food, great vibe, nobread friendly, and perfect location. I absolutely recommend checking out Café Select!
