My search for the ultimate gluten free cake started when I read an article about Chelsea Clinton’s gluten free wedding cake, and I realized that one day I would NEED to like gluten free dessert. Gluten was still largely unheard of at that time, so extra press was drawn to that story and people began to speculate where her cake could be from. One possible source of the cake was BabyCakes NYC on the Lower East Side. So off my mom and I went in search of BabyCakes…
When we arrived, we were amazed to find a cute little storefront that opened into gluten and dairy free heaven. The cupcake I had from BabyCakes was the first cupcake I had that ACTUALLY tasted like a ‘real’ cupcake. My favorites were the mocha brownie cupcake, red velvet cupcake, and all other chocolate treats. The chocolate chip cookies and chocolate brownies were amazing, too, and some of my staple orders. If you bring your dessert home, I definitely recommend throwing it in the microwave for a few seconds; you can’t go wrong with a little extra heat.
Babycakes is free of refined sugar, gluten, dairy, soy, egg, and wheat, and it is certified vegan and kosher. It is by far the #1 gluten free bakery in NYC, so you can imagine how excited I am to hear that Babycakes, now called Erin McKenna’s Bakery, has a location in Los Angeles too. The desserts are just as delicious and the store is just as cute, and it’s only a matter of time before Erin McKenna’s Bakery is known as the #1 bakery in LA! Gluten free foodies… hurry to Erin McKenna’s Bakery now!
