Nested atop one of San Francisco’s many hills, Flour & Co is a charming bakery that’s guaranteed to have a line out the door during the weekends, and for good reason. With quality options for both those who don’t eat gluten and those who do, Flour & Co is definitely worth a visit…
On the coffee front, Flour & Co is well-equipped. They make all of their coffee and espresso drinks with Seattle’s legendary Stumptown coffee. They also offer both almond and soy milk for those of you that don’t consume dairy either. I ordered an almond milk latte, and it tasted amazing and also provided me with my necessary caffeine intake for the day.
Out of many bakeries I’ve been to, Flour & Co probably made me feel most like a normal person during breakfast. Their gluten free menu boasts Cinnamon Pecan Coffee Cake, a Seasonal Muffin, and an English Muffin, which you can have made into a sandwich. If you’re the type of person that prefers a sweet breakfast to savory, the coffee cake should be your go-to. The cake was moist and the streusel crumble was crisp and flavorful. The Seasonal Muffin was also on point. Many gluten-free muffins can be extremely dense in texture, but this muffin was fluffy and not too sweet.
The English Muffin was definitely the star of the show. I made mine into a sandwich with egg and bacon and it was potentially one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve ever eaten. The muffin itself was delightfully buttery and flaky – again, a quality that is rarely found in gluten-free baked goods. The eggs were cooked with cheese, because cheese makes everything better. The bacon was obviously incredible, of course.
Flour & Co has a few other options for sweets, which include the Triple Chocolate Brownie and the Peanutty Peanut Butter Cookie. This chocolate brownie was incredibly rich. It was also in the shape of a heart, which was clearly adorable, and topped off with a fine dusting of powdered sugar. The peanut butter cookie gained its flavor not only by what was obviously a respectable amount of peanut butter, but also by the nuts themselves.
As someone who is gluten-free, you can never have too many bakeries on your list. You should definitely make the visit to Nob Hill to check out this neighborhood favorite.
