I just had my first fonut and I’m not going back to New York City until Fonuts graces NYC with its presence. The fonut, or faux-donut, is a baked/steamed donut and a modern spin to the classic dessert. Founded by pastry chef, Waylynn Lucas, and gluten free baker Nancy Truman, fonuts focuses on all natural ingredients and avoids the use of fryer oil. Healthy and unbelievably delicious; I still can’t get over how tasty these treats are…
There are currently 10 flavors of gluten free fonuts: peanut butter chocolate, vanilla latte, banana cinnamon, chocolate hazelnut, pumpkin, lemon, coconut passion fruit, chocolate coconut, chocolate with sprinkles, and banana chocolate. I love seeing bakeries that go out of their way to label gluten free items on their display cases, and Fonuts is the perfect example of one that does just that. Fonuts takes extra caution to keep all gluten free fonuts separate from the gluten filled fonuts, and they even take the labeling game one step further! Next to the gluten free fonuts sits a case of gluten free AND vegan fonuts. Given that I am dairy free, too, I absolutely love this. Gluten free and vegan flavors include the chocolate coconut, raspberry vanilla, lemon, and coconut passion fruit. I tried the chocolate coconut and raspberry vanilla on my last visit, and both fonuts were gone in seconds. So soft, the dessert falls apart in your hands and melts in your mouth, and I was truly obsessed.
The bakery, located in Beverly Grove, needs to be added to everyone’s hit list… now. The staff is super helpful and full of recommendations, and any bakery that goes out of their way to ensure that the nobread crowd has a wonderful, delicious, dining experience deserves 5 stars in my book. Fonuts- hurry up and come to NYC! We need you…
