Tucked away in an alley on the Lower East Side, Freemans Restaurant is New York City’s hidden gem. I’ve heard about Freemans for years and if you ask any New Yorker for a brunch recomenndation, you are likely to be told that Freemans is your spot. Why? Not only is the food delicious and nobread friendly, but Freemans is cozy and makes you feel as though you are dining in a country home. With plenty of gluten free options, a relaxed and welcoming staff, and delicious food, it’s no wonder why Freemans is so popular…
Freemans is best known for breakfast & brunch, and I love the fact that the majority of the brunch menu is gluten free! The devils on horseback, or bacon wrapped dates, are nobread approved and seen on just about every table. The open-face egg white omelette with butternut squash nocheese served with greens was one of the best omelettes I have ever had. I was torn between this dish and the skillet eggs with bacon, grits, spinach, and cheddar (notoast), and although I was more than satisfied with my omelette, my cousin’s skillet eggs looked incredible. I tasted her dish and I am happy to announce this dish tastes just as good as it looks! Other nobread orders at my table included the Freemans burger nobread with french fries and the scrambled eggs with roasted potatoes and thick cut bacon. The french fries are awesome but subject to cross contamination in the fryer, so be careful if you are sensitive! Lastly, for those of you in the mood for lunch, the kale salad with pine nuts, carrot-yogurt puree, golden raisins, and lemon vinaigrette is the perfect light and healthy option for you. Freemans also attracts a big crowd for dinner! I rarely order chicken at restaurants unless I hear it is a must-try, and I am told the chicken breast confit is a must order for the table.
What I liked most about my experience at Freemans was how long the staff let my table sit for. At no point during my meal did I feel as though our waitress was hovering or antsy to flip the table. Rather, she encouraged us to take our time and enjoy our meal. Our waitress was also incredibly nobread knowledgeable and happy to answer any question thrown her way. I can’t believe it took me this long to dine at Freemans, but I am more than happy I finally did and I will absolutely be back in no time!
