Talk to any experienced foodie in the LA area, and you can bet they will have something to say about Gjelina. Commonly referred to as the best restaurant on the west-side, the Venice establishment has earned its name within the LA restaurant scene. Situated on the bustling and ever trendy street of Abbot Kinney, Gjelina offers amazing American fare for those lucky enough to snag a reservation. That’s right, although walk-ins are welcome, you will most likely find a crowd gathering outside the door during popular dining times…
All it took was one meal at Gjelina for it to become my favorite restaurant in all of California. Countless NOBREAD approved items filled the menu, and not only were the dishes unique and flavorful, but they were incredibly delicious! The menu at Gjelina operates seasonally, so you can be sure that you are always served the freshest possible ingredients. With an extensive menu, Gjelina has options for all foodies, but it’s what they do with their vegetables that have diners the most impressed. Traditional farmer’s market favorites are reconstructed with surprising twists, all of which work in the best way possible. The wood-roasted cauliflower with garlic, chili, and vinegar is amazing and when in season, the charred Brussels sprouts with cilantro and walnuts is an absolute must. As far as their small plates go, the pork belly with root vegetables and apple glaze is innovative and comforting. Other NOBREAD approved dishes you HAVE to try: the grilled broccolini, wood roasted sunchokes, butternut squash, smoked trout salad, and grilled calamari. Oh, and if you are able to tolerate cross contamination, the fries are incredible too! Gjelina is also known for their pizzas, but unfortunately the NOBREAD crowd has to sit these favorites out.
Gjelina is the perfect hipster haven with excellent food to match, and don’t be surprised if you run into a celebrity or two! The best part about Gjelina is Gjelina Take-Away (GTA) right next door; it’s a more casual spot offering Gjelina’s same high quality foods minus the hassle of reservations and a wait. For the real Venice experience, eat your purchases in the adjacent alleyway and chat with fellow foodies over a delicious, NOBREAD approved meal.
