Green Heart Foods may be one of my favorite places I’ve done a food review for to date. The food is seasonal, approachable and absolutely delicious. It’s really a shame that in a beautiful city like San Francisco that has access to such fresh and abundant produce, there aren’t more places like this! Located in the Mission, this small café is not exactly a sit down restaurant, but it’s good enough for a quick bite or for an on-the-go meal. Rumor has it that they will be expanding the location in the near future to provide more seating and longer hours. And not to worry, if you find Green Heart to be too far, they are available via delivery services like Postmates.
Lucky for me, I was able to try a little bit of everything on the menu, which changes weekly and can also be followed online. Every week they have special items on the menu. During my visit these included: Lentil soup with rich coconut milk, a roasted chicken with pecorino and brown rice, and an arrangement of seasonal salads such as a cauliflower raisin, and assorted vegetables and rice. Apart from the regularly changing options, there are a few items that they keep on the normal rotation, including smoothies, frothy matchas and coffees blended with dates for sweetness, and warming macro bowls. I would highly recommend checking on the menu online to see all the options they have for the week. The best part of all is that basically everything on the menu is gluten-free and menu items are clearly labeled to show what allergens are present (ie. dairy). If you eat in store, they are happy to make accommodations such as subbing brown rice for farro.
Do yourself a favor and head over to Green Heart for a breakfast/ lunch you won’t forget, and to leave with a tummy that will be forever grateful. I will definitely be making a ton of delivery orders in my future, and I apologize to my bank account in advance.
