A House of Small Wonder in Williamsburg is exactly that; a little house filled with a world of wonder. I mean… there’s a tree growing in the middle of the restaurant! House is best described as an adorable cafe that it is most popular for brunch & lunch. Furthermore, it has one of the most interesting menus I’ve seen in some time! Croissants, Japanese noodle dishes, sandwiches with gluten free bread, miso soups, and taco rice bowls?? Yes, this cafe serves up quite the mix…
On first glance of the menu, it is difficult to tell whether or not several dishes are nobread approved. Soy and teriyaki are staple elements of many of the Japanese dishes, and they are NOT nobread friendly. Thankfully, House of Small Wonder is popular for their sandwiches, and all sandwiches are gluten free when you ask for gluten free bread. Upon ordering, I was torn between the two eggs with potato gratin and a salad of my choice, and the salmon dressed in a ginger sauce and served with miso soup. I ultimately chose the salmon, but you MUST ask for nosauce and nosoup. The plate is also served with a house salad and jasmine rice, both of which are nobread approved, and if you need something a little extra I recommend ordering a side Mediterranean salad, corn soup, or market fruit salad.
The menu is small, but you will definitely find a dish to suit your preference. With an adorable ambiance and incredibly sweet staff, it’s no wonder why the restaurant has built a loyal following. The verdict? I’d be more than happy to go back to this adorable cafe the next time I venture to BK!
