If you are in the mood for healthy, local, great-tasting food, look no further than Modern Market. The Denver-based chain has finally found its way to the East Coast with its new Bethesda location; and you will not want to miss out on their delicious and affordable farm-to-table options…
After one look at the menu, it was easy to see that Modern Market will become a NOBREAD hotspot. Every salad, pizza, and sandwich can be made gluten free, and with a variety of different options, it is easy to find something for everyone.
Modern Market serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as brunch on the weekends. The breakfast menu consists of items such as a Sausage Kale Scramble with cage free eggs, nitrate-, h&a-free sausage and roasted breakfast potatoes (ask for no toast) and a Chipotle Egg Breakfast Sandwich with hormone-free bacon, chipotle aioli, tomato & white cheddar (ask for GF bread.)
Next up, the pizza. It is difficult to find a good gluten-free pizza, however Modern Market has many amazing gluten-free pizza options. I recommend the Prosciutto pizza with arugula, pear, and a three cheese blend, or the classic M’Rita Pizza. I was told by my friend that it was impossible to distinguish between the gluten and gluten-free pizza. The crust was just that good!
As mentioned earlier, any sandwich on the menu can be made gluten-free. The Blueberry Pesto Sandwich is unique to Modern Market. With fresh mozzarella, basil pesto, and blueberry balsamic jam, the sandwich is too intriguing not to try. If you are looking for a non-vegetarian option look no further than the Chipotle Steak Sandwich with grilled flank steak, and spicy chipotle aioli.
All the salads are naturally gluten free, with the exception of the Roman Salad and the Toscano Salad. However, both can easily be made gluten free, just ask for no bread.
Lastly, but certainly not least, if you are a coffee and dessert fan like me, the Compass Coffee Cold Brew and the chocolate chip cookies are a must. I was excited at the prospect of cold brew on tap, and the excitement only doubled after trying my coffee. The cold brew did not disappoint. I could have easily drank four cups. Now to the chocolate chip cookies. I almost missed the cookies entirely because they are not on the menu. When you go to pay, make sure to look down at the register and grab a chocolate chip cookie (or three.) The cookie was soft, chewy, and highly addicting.
If you live anywhere near Bethesda, Modern Market is sure to be your new go-to healthy hotspot. Even if you don’t, the trip out to Maryland is worth it for all of the amazing gluten free options found at Modern Market. Better yet, a location is opening on Vermont Avenue by McPherson Square in DC very soon.
