Amongst the sea of restaurants to choose from in San Francisco, I’m constantly looking for healthy options because they’re the most likely to have NOBREAD–friendly options. Insert Nourish Café: it’s the perfect find for both fresh and delicious options, and they nail GF food without even trying! This tiny café is located in the Richmond District of San Francisco and delivers a perfectly nutritious plant-based breakfast or lunch. Think acai-bowls, breakfast toasts, salads, gluten-free baked goods and more. Don’t let “plant-based” deter you– even meat eaters will leave full and happy. The best part about Nourish Cafe is that the entire menu can be made gluten-free, and all the food is carefully coded so that NOBREADers know where GF bread can be swapped in…
Nourish is extraordinarily NOBREAD friendly, and everything that is GF is indicated on the menu or noted how to substitute. The highlights of the menu are the ginormous salad bowls, sandwiches that can all be done on GF bread, and Acai Bowls made with GF granola. My friends and I all decided to go with the most popular dishes on the menu that included the Nourish Bowl, Bimbimbap Salad, Yam and Cheese Sandwich (sub gluten-free bread!), and a glorious GF chocolate chip cookie. Each dressing was unique, tasty, and oil-free! The Nourish Salad was definitely my favorite and came in a large bowl overflowing with quinoa, yams, pickled beets, red pepper hummus, to name a few, and a no-oil hemp dressing that pulled everything together delightfully. The Nourish also came as a burrito using a raw spicy flatbread wrap to make it NOBREAD approved.
The Yam and Cheese Sandwich made with no-dairy cashew cheese came highly recommended by the woman at the counter and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The bread was memory-filled sourdough bread that’s moist and tasted like it was made with gluten. But fear not, this delicious bread was definitely gluten-free (I even double-checked since I haven’t had a GF bread that tasted quite like it). Also, please don’t leave without getting one of Nourish’s NOBREAD deserts! They usually have a variety of cookies, granola bars, and macaroons that are all GF and have never disappointed.
Nourish Café remains one of my favorite NOBREAD restaurants because they have a plethora of GF options, are accommodating of substitutions, and have a variety of GF treats. This also happens to be why I trek from the Marina to Richmond every weekend to get my fix. I appreciate how much care this restaurant has with their ingredients, which are all organic, wholefoods and non-GMO. Their mission is to “help you eat healthier and feel amazing”, and they do exactly that.
