When people ask me what foods I miss, the answer is easy; I miss cookies. Unfortunately for those of us in the nobread crowd, good gluten free cookies are hard to find, and it is rare that popular New York City bakeries serve a gluten free alternative. Schmackary’s, however, located in Hells Kitchen, is one of the most popular cookie bakeries in New York City, AND not only do they have gluten free cookies on hand, but they have a variety of unique cookie flavors that are absolutely delicious…
I went to Schmackary’s for my first time last week and ordered the Monster cookie (with M&M chocolates), the sweet corn cookie (corn flour / cornmeal / sweet corn / cranberries / pecan bits), and a giant macaroon cookie. Although these cookies are not dairy free, they are gluten free and a necessary addition to every gluten free persons diet. For those highly sensitive to gluten, Schmackary’s cautions that gluten free cookies and regular cookies are placed side by side and therefore subject to cross contamination. The cookies are big, so you will definitely be full after one, but if you have a sweet tooth like myself, there’s no way you’ll want to stop after just one cookie. Schmackary’s serves some varieties of gluten free cookies year round, including the Monster cookie, but other GF flavors are seasonal. The gluten free candied yam cookie (corn flour / sweet potato / toasted pecans / brown sugar / cinnamon / toasted marshmallow) is a fall staple and I hear it’s amazing, and I can’t wait for summer so I can try the strawberries & cream cookie!
I live downtown and unfortunately I am far from the bakery, but I can guarantee that I will be back to Midtown in no time! Schmackary’s is perfectly convenient to all in the Theater District, and whether you go to Schmackary’s for a pre/post theater snack, or just to satisfy your sweet tooth craving, you will love your Schmackary’s experience. I think it’s time we open a second location downtown 🙂
