Shake Shack is hands down one of the most popular burger joints in the US. With locations in NYC, LA, DC, and 14 more cities/states, the hotspot is growing like rapid fire. It’s now a publicly traded company with locations in the UK, Japan, South Korea and more! Well, as you can imagine, gluten-free living at a fast-casual burger joint is far from easy. Thankfully, I’m happy to report that Shake Shack takes dining allergies super seriously and each location is equipped with all the information you need to know! …
The Shake Shack burger, in its simplest form is 100% gluten-free, so if you are in the mood for a burger, order the hamburger with no bun! All of the burgers can be made gluten-free, EXCEPT for the veggie (shroom) burger, which has breadcrumbs. I love the ShackBurger with no bun, which is a cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato, and their signature ShackSauce! If you are sensitive to cross-contamination, Shake Shack notes that there may be cross-contamination in the cheese sauce and french fries. For the risk takers, make your burger a double and add bacon if you’re really hungry… But leave room for the fries! Crinkle fries are the way to go! Again, be careful if you are sensitive to cross-contamination- these fries are cooked in the same fryer as the Shroom Burger. For the bread lovers, Shake Shack is rolling out gluten-free buns! The Battery Park City, UES, WeHo, Summerlin and Vegas Shacks are now offering these GF hamburger buns, and the reception has been super positive, so hopefully they will be going national soon!
Dessert at Shake Shack is a must; the frozen custard is gluten-free and you can turn the treat into a milkshake or eat it in a cup. Make sure to double-check the ingredients of the “Custard of the Week” with the cashier before ordering. Mix-ins that are safe to add include strawberry purée, peanut butter, chocolate toffee, marshmallow, fudge, caramel, sprinkles, cherries, banana, and almonds. As for drinks, all soft drinks and wines are gluten-free, but the beer options do generally contain gluten.
Big things are in store for Shake Shack, and I am excited to see new locations continue to pop up left and right! Now we just need those gluten-free buns to make it out to Chicago!
