Long gone are the days where our parents would yell at us for eating the freshly fallen white snow off the pavement. Snowdays has now made eating “snow”—or shaved cream—acceptable! An evolution of the Taiwanese and Korean shaved ices, shaved cream blends the fluffy texture of snow with the creaminess and taste of ice cream. This delicacy has taken over the west coast and is quickly flurrying its way across the nation, and now Snowdays has introduced itself to the big apple…
Being a huge fan of ice cream, I was skeptical when my friends kept raving about just how creamy the lower-calorie dessert was. I had to go check it out myself. The store is small with a few tables and a high-top counter; however, the cheery atmosphere and cute winter-themed decorations immediately won me over. The menu allows you to either create your own concoction, or choose from a list of five combos. Although I usually like to go for one of the “regular” or “top-sellers” on a menu, I decided to make my own cup. There are four steps: 1) Choose your size 2) Choose a flavor 3) Choose toppings 4) Drizzle it up! I chose regular—the smallest size (but trust me, it’s an incredibly generous serving!)—and for my flavors, I ordered green tea and black sesame. You can have one free drizzle; any toppings are $0.50, while additional drizzles are $0.25 each. Lucky for me, Snowdays had plenty of NOBREAD friendly toppings, such as their red beans, coconut shavings, fruit, and a variety of nuts! A few of their sauces are gluten-free too! I’d definitely suggest the coconut drizzle, which added a nice sweetness, and paired with strawberry sauce, the two gave a great depth of flavor! The first bite really turned me into a believer—shaved cream had never tasted, well, so creamy!
Snowdays has introduced a new category of desserts while also providing numerous options for those who are gluten-free. Almost everything is gluten-free on their menu, just beware of their cookie and cereal toppings. So the next time you’re craving something sweet with the creaminess of ice cream minus the heavy calories, head over to Snowdays for a delicious treat!
