New York readers… I found the Los Angeles Jack’s Wife Freda! Sqirl, located in Echo Park, is an adorable café serving sustainable, organic cuisine produced on family owned farms. Care and attention is given to each ingredient used in the dishes, and all meals are unique and healthy. The café is open until 3PM, and given its popularity, I recommend getting there early. Yes the food is delicious, but Sqirl’s scene is what makes the restaurant special. Dining solo is a joy here; on both of my visits to the restaurant, I’ve had wonderful conversations with diners at the tables next to me, making Sqirl one of my favorite restaurants in the area…
My go-to order at Sqirl is the green goddess salad with greens, avocado, lemon cucumbers, sorrel, and a hard-boiled egg. I top my salad with a sunny side up egg too for a little extra protein. The dressing on the salad is delicious, and although the salad may not sound filling, it absolutely is. The daily frittata is another popular order amongst the NOBREAD crowd, but if you are dairy free the dish is a no-go. The sorrel pesto rice bowl with brown rice, nut free sorrel pesto, lemon, hot sauce, black radish, feta, and a poached egg is filling and a great option for vegetarians. A vegan version of this dish is offered too–“The Stella” as it is called, subs greens and radishes for the poached eggs and feta, and the pesto/hot sauce is withheld too.
With an open kitchen, cool crowd, and delicious HEALTHY food, Sqirl is a must try for everyone in the Los Angeles area. Even if you have no plans to be in Echo Park, Sqirl is worth the trip. Especially if you’re dining solo… and single. Grab a table on the walkway or in the garden, set up shop with your work, and enjoy a wonderful meal.
