Sushi on Jones is the new omakase spot in Noho by Chef David Bouhadana and partner Derek Feldman. But before you judge the idea of yet another omakase restaurant in New York and the painful price tag that normally goes with it, let me explain. If you can manage to grab a seat at the already popular four-stool sushi bar, Sushi on Jones provides you with an absolutely incredible meal. For $50 you can get a 12 piece meal, made up of nigiri and a hand roll, all served to you in a casual 30 minutes. Not only do you get to eat an intimate meal but you also get to watch the magic happen as each piece of nigiri is assembled right in front of you! Located in the newly opened Bowery Market, an outdoor eatery hosting some other nobread favorites such as The Butcher’s Daughter, Sushi on Jones will change the way you approach sushi…
The menu at Sushi on Jones is super nobread friendly, with both gluten-free rice and a special gluten-free soy sauce aged three years from Japan available. With fish brought in fresh, Sushi on Jones still gives you a wide range of bites from scallop, crab, hamachi, uni, and wagyu to tuna, shrimp and salmon. While eel is also offered, the two chefs behind the counter are more than happy to make any substitutions you may request! Everything is cold, crisp and meticulously prepared; as soon as you finish one piece the next one arrives with understated flair. My favorite dishes were the salmon and the toro–the fish literally melts in your mouth. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to order it anywhere else again! The only dish I wasn’t crazy for was the wagyu beef and uni because I didn’t like the clash of textures and flavor. It was cool to watch the sushi chefs torch the wagyu beef before serving! Nothing is too overwhelming in terms of size (the worst is trying to eat a piece of sushi that’s too big to consume in one bite!) or flavor, but the freshness stands out, leaving you feeling light and satisfied (not stuffed). However, if you’re still hungry at the end of the meal you have the option to add additional pieces of nigiri to your order for a slight extra charge, all the while keeping it within your 30 minute time slot.
Open for both lunch and dinner, Sushi on Jones offers a unique and fun dining experience for both solo diners and pairs. Given the pacing of the food, talking is at a minimum but it is well worth it! Although seats are always full you can text for reservations, making the whole experience hassle-free. I went for lunch and thought it was a great, fast and casual option. Sushi on Jones is an oasis in an area that is always bustling with energy and people. I’m excited to go back and try it for dinner soon, and you should too!
