In a land of many, many, many Mexican options to choose from, The Little Chihuahua is a well known contender for having some of the better food in the game. And with three locations around the city, chances are you’ll find yourself near one at some point in the near future. If you haven’t already experienced this gem, treat yourself …
Many items on this menu are made with corn tortillas (enchiladas, tacos) and therefore are already naturally gluten-free. GF tortillas are available for other items though, including quesadillas, and burritos, which are the main attraction in my opinion. TLC is dedicated to sourcing its meat from those who practice sustainable farming, and the quality is evident. My go-to is usually the carnitas, although the al pastor would be a close second. After the burrito, my next favorite thing here is brunch. I’ve been infatuated with chiles rellenos since the first time I ever had one, and TLC’s breakfast version is pretty darn good: grilled and roasted poblano chile stuffed with scrambled eggs, mexican potatoes, sautéed poblano chiles and onions, spinach and goat cheese, then smothered with ranchero sauce and garnished with cotija cheese. It’s perfect hangover food, but also perfectly glorious no matter what your state is. Chilaquiles, enchiladas, breakfast burritos, and breakfast tacos are some other lovely choices that grace the brunch menu.
A step above many of the divey Mexican joints around SF, The Little Chihuahua is a great casual dining option for those wanting a cleaner (and sustainably sourced!) option. Conveniently located in Noe, the Mission, and Lower Haight, The Little Chihuahua should be at the top of your list the next time you need your Mexican fix (or just need a base before you go see a show at the Independent).
