Wheat’s End Cafe is a dedicated gluten-free business located in Lakeview. This cozy, neighborhood spot offers GF breakfast and lunch, and brunch on weekends. The whole menu is made from scratch and Wheat’s End uses organic ingredients whenever possible. On the bottom of the menu, it says “surprisingly gluten-free”. You better believe it! From bagels to waffles to sandwiches, oh Chicago, you’ve outdone yourself. I think I’ve finally found… gluten-free heaven!…
Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, on the menu is gluten-free. This made it difficult to choose what to order, which is not something that happens very often. They have many dairy-free and vegan options as well. I started off with some sweets – a chocolate doughnut, an apple cinnamon roll and a pumpkin doughnut. The chocolate doughnut tasted like devil’s food cake! Both doughnuts had rich flavor and great texture. Nothing on the menu tasted “gluten-free” in the best way possible. I was so pleasantly surprised that everything had perfect texture and flavor. Next, I ate the blueberry pancakes (dairy-free version). They were so fluffy and delicious, plus the blueberries added the perfect addition of sweetness. I would definitely recommend. I also tried an English muffin and an onion bagel. Both were tasty, but I’d have to say the onion bagel was my favorite item on the menu!
Wheat’s End Cafe will not only make you feel at home with their outstanding service, but they will also make you feel confident with their signs on every table asking for outside food to not be brought into the cafe. Since it is a 100% gluten-free establishment, there is absolutely no risk of cross-contamination. You can indulge in peace! I visited Wheat’s End Cafe for their weekend brunch offering. I wish I could have tasted the pumpkin cinnamon roll, the breakfast potatoes and the everything bagel. Aside from an extensive GF menu, Wheat’s End also offers “frozen goodies for home”. This includes mini loaves of bread, pizza crust, bagels and English muffins. They supply a lot of other Chicago restaurants with gluten-free bread too. They also have various lunch options during the week, featuring gluten-free paninis, soup and more! Next time, I would love to come for lunch and try the salads, the zucchini carrot potato fritters and the veggie panini. The “family owned” vibe got me hooked and I will definitely be returning to taste the rest of these incredible gluten-free dishes.
