So here's what we think...

Fenix is the epitome of a Californian-style Mexican restaurant, complete with stylish flair. Upon entering, you’ll be admiring the Pinterest-eque hanging plants, colorful tiles, and open space. The food at Fenix is playful, with loads of small plates that come with each main course, and untraditional takes on traditional Mexican food. NOBREADERS can rejoice since plenty of the menu is gluten free.

At first glance, I was hesitant about the drink choices since nowhere on the menu did I see tequila or a margarita. Well, it turns out all of their drinks are made with wines, a modern take on the classic Sangria. I ordered the spicy rose cocktail made with jalapeno, prickly pear puree and lemon, lime and orange juice – I’m definitely going back for this one. The meal highlights for me were the Mexican soup, fish, and guacamole. Who would have thought that a simple, hearty chicken broth, made with potatoes, corn and capers, would be one of my favorites of the night? My only request is that they deliver it during lunch because it would quickly become my new “not-so-guilty” pleasure. The fish was a beautiful red snapper that was coated in a light broth with celery and cucumber slaw, it was a great Summer dish. We also enjoyed the squash entrée, which was coated in tomato sauce with cheese and beans – it was incredibly delicious! I’d recommend staying away from the tortilla chips if you are subject to CC since they are fried in the same fryer. Also, the sopa is fried, so if you are worried about it, skip it! There are plenty of other (delicious) things to choose from. Even though I couldn’t breathe by the time desert came around from being so full, we decided to “taste” the flan. It had a slight guava flavor and was different than any other flan I’ve tried. Fenix was a great experience. Everything from the mouthwatering Sangritas to the flan was delicious. The staff is very aware of the gluten free options and will outline on the menu what you should be careful of should you have any concerns. I would definitely go back, especially since I can’t stop thinking about those drinks!
