I’ve lived on Mulberry Street for over 2 years now, and given how many amazing restaurants there are in the area, it’s funny how easily an incredible-neighborhood spot can be overlooked! For years I’ve walked by Ruby’s Cafe on Mulberry and Spring, and noted its crowd and popularity, and have commented on how delicious the menu looks. So why has it taken me so long to stop in? Who knows? But I had the opportunity to go to the cafe for the first time this week, and I think I found my new favorite NoLiTa restaurant! …
The salads at Ruby’s all sounded so delicious that it was hard to choose which one I wanted to order! I opted for the pumpkin salad on spinach with balsamic, and added shrimp for a little protein boost. The salad was amazing! The kale salad with goji berries, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, and no breadcrumbs is calling my name for my next visit! Per usual, I ordered a side of Brussels sprouts and French fries to accompany my salad. Both were addicting– I officially have another contender for best Brussels sprouts in New York City! The brussels and fries share the same fryer as the fried chicken… but the fried chicken is made with corn and potato starch and therefore it is gluten free, too!! Ruby’s is best known for their burgers, and although they now serve gluten-free bread! All of the burgers are gluten-free when you ask for NOBREAD… even the fried chicken burger and the portobello mushroom burger! Good news for the pasta lovers, too. Gluten-free pasta is served at the cafe. The pasta is corn and rice based, and it’s pretty awesome.
Breakfast & brunch are the most popular meals at the tiny cafe, so be prepared to wait a little bit for a seat, but gluten-free options including the breakfast bowl, mushroom scramble nobread, and green eggs bowl are well worth waiting for! Ruby’s is my new favorite restaurant in NoLiTa and I will absolutely be back soon!
