When I think of fresh, healthy eats in LA, I think of Echo Park. The town is adorable and very well-known for their healthy cafes that use the best, locally-sourced ingredients. In fact, when my friend and I first moved to LA, she moved to Echo Park because she wanted a house with a backyard where she could farm her own vegetables. I guess that’s the norm over there! Honey Hi opened this winter in Echo Park and has been the talk of the town and of the Instagram community ever since. With it’s cute decor (hi pink tables) and focus on “food that makes you feel good,” it’s no wonder why it has risen to such popularity!…
The best part about the menu at Honey Hi is that everything is gluten-free. The most popular dish on the menu is the Breakfast Bowl filled with sweet potato hash, pastured turmeric poached egg, marin sun farms heritage bacon, local greens, avocado, herbs, sumac, and smoked paprika. This bowl just screams deliciousness and health! Now we all know I’m a weirdo when it comes to eggs. If the egg yolk isn’t SUPER dark orange, I won’t eat it. (The darker yolk implies pasteurized and organic). Well not only does Honey Hi use eggs with the darkest of yolks, but they also poach their eggs in turmeric, too, to really pack on the health benefits. For the bread lovers, I recommend the gluten-free sourdough tartness! Honey Hi is also very well known for their bowls… I have my eye on “That One Bowl” for my next visit. The bowl is filled with sprouted herbed quinoa, pumpkin seed arugula pesto, kale, shaved cucumber, cherry tomato, watermelon radish, pickled onion, roasted pumpkin seeds, and a turmeric poached egg, and you have the option of making it vegan if you’d like! It’s cool to see so many bowls, like a miso bowl and a bowl with turkey meatballs, that wouldn’t typically be gluten-free actually be GF!
The cafe only has a few table tops, but much of the menu is made to grab and go, so Honey Hi is the perfect place to go and sit with a friend or to pick up lunch on the run. One last note before I forget… try the chocolate chip cookie! It is made with cassava flour and it is absolutely delicious!
