I think I’ve been to just about every steakhouse in Midtown; some I love and others I stay away from. The steakhouses I stay away from are characterized by an older ambiance, plain ‘ol slabs of meat, and servers who are well past the appropriate age of retirement. The fun steakhouses, on the other hand, have a more modern vibe, pair meats and seafood with interesting vegetables and garnishes, and have servers who are attentive, friendly, and understand gluten and other dietary restrictions. Strip House, with locations in Greenwich Village/Union Square and Midtown West, fits the bill of a steakhouse I like, and after a meal here this week, it has been added to my Midtown steakhouse rotation…
Strip house is naturally nobread approved and items on the menu containing gluten are relatively easy to pick out. For example, the crispy calamari, crabcakes, and anything on a bun or roll are clear avoids. Thankfully, over 90% of the menu IS gluten free, and Strip House puts a modern twist on traditional steakhouse items. My favorite order: the Strip House roasted bacon. Even if you avoid red meat, you have to take a bite! Also, the sea scallops in black truffle butter, seafood cobb salad (shrimp, scallop, crab meat, calamari, avocado, egg, haricots vert), and asparagus salad are great if you are in the mood for something light. For entrees, the roasted chilean sea bass is amazing! And to all the guys reading this, don’t worry, there is a whole list of nobread approved 14oz + steaks. Per usual, Strip House lives up to other steakhouses with their list of sides. The crisp goose fat potatoes, garlic herb french fries, and twice baked potatoes (for the cheese lovers) are ALL delicious! If you are sensitive to cross contamination, however, I would avoid.
Delicious food, great portion sizes, and plenty of nobread approved items to choose from; I recommend Strip House for the next time you need to take a client to lunch, have dinner with your parents, or simply are in the mood for a big night of steak!
