It’s no secret that Los Angeles is the celebrity capital of the world. Dining next to an A-lister is relatively common and it’s always fun to see what ‘stars’ are like in ‘real-life.’ Well, if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of reality TV’s ‘stars,’ there is no other place to go than Sur Restaurant, located in West Hollywood. At Lisa Vanderpump’s restaurant, SUR, diners are part of the reality TV experience, and you never know which cast member you will see… or who will be behind the bar… while you enjoy a meal fit for a star…
Since 2011, Sur has been featured on the Bravo series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. More recently, Sur is known for its involvement in RHOBH spin-off, Vanderpump Rules. The series follows the lives of both Vanderpump and her posh staff, and the show’s popularity skyrocketed the restaurant to success. Going to SUR can be more of a Hollywood attraction than a true dining experience; however, the restaurant’s Southern European inspired plates are satisfying and do the trick. For a NOBREAD approved starter, the smoked salmon plate with alfalfa sprouts salad, capers, and mango dressing is light and fresh. Similarly, the chopped arugula salad with buffalo mozzarella, avocado, black olives, tomatoes, roasted pecans is simple yet filling. SUR does not offer a separate gluten free menu, but they are willing to accommodate gluten free diners. Meat entrees are recommended without sauce to ensure that they are GF, and the seared ahi tuna is a popular menu item that I recommend ordering. The tuna is crusted in sesame seeds, fresh herbs, and Tamari (GF!) soy sauce. The entree, as well other poultry and fish entrees are served with a choice of two side orders, and my favorite sides are the grilled vegetables and Brussels sprouts.
Although the atmosphere may be more exciting than the meal, SUR is a hotspot within the LA foodie scene. The ‘reality’ of SUR is that most diners come to catch a glimpse of the cast from Vanderpump Rules. As far as the food, plates are pricey, traditional, and simple. NOBREAD friendly? Sure. If you’re looking for a high class, fine dining experience, I recommend Sur’s sister restaurant, Villa Blanca.
