I used to have a smoothie every. single. morning. I couldn’t start my day without one! If I went a morning without my smoothie my whole day was thrown. I thought I HAD to have one for a healthy start. But then I had so many smoothies I became sick of them!! Over the last year, I went from having 6-7 smoothies a week to … one? I detached what my body wanted from what it thought it wanted. INTUITIVE EATING. Outside of my allergies I don’t (and refuse) to follow any other diets or food rules. I eat the foods my body craves when I am craving them. If I want potatoes for breakfast, I have them. If I want a latte and a cookie, I have them. The result? My most physically fit and emotionally stable self.
I am gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free. There are a few foods like chicken and lentils that I’m also sensitive to and therefore avoid, but outside of these restrictions, I am not paleo. I’m not keto. I’m not Whole30, vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian etc etc.
Given my career in the wellness industry, I’m exposed to every fad diet out there. And they all sound super interesting! Especially the ones that seem to promise unreal results. What I found over the years of partaking in fad diets is that they weren’t sustainable. I found that when I ignored what my body wanted and ate what “I was supposed to eat” I ended up binging on sweets or devouring something else to ‘satisfy’ me. Following diets changed my relationship with food and turned food into a chore, rather than nourishment.
Sure my breakfast smoothies may qualify as keto, paleo, or vegan, or I have a couple of days where I don’t have grains and therefore I ate paleo, but that’s just coincidence! I ask my mind, body, and soul what food it wants and I nourish myself with it. Eat the foods you want to eat when YOU want to eat them, and don’t punish yourself for it. Trust your gut… literally!!
Also, as you’ve seen from my E-Books, I am all about a reset! A 4-7 day something for when you’re feeling kinda ‘eh,’ or after a vacation when you want to kickstart new wellness goals. I always emphasize that my E-Books are ‘guides’ and include several alterations … they all also have dessert!!
What’s healthy for one person IS NOT necessarily right for you. Only YOU know what is right for YOU. Mentally. Physically. Emotionally. Remember that. Oh… and eat the cookie.
